Sodium Alginate as Black Gutta

My version of Black Gutta
Hi there! Tonight I mixed up a new batch of Drimarene K / Procion fiber-reactive dyes - yum yum - and also I made a new batch of sodium alginate (seaweed) to use as gutta (pronounced "gootah").
I took some photos while I was painting, and I quickly made a mini video which I'll share with you here:
Here are a couple of photos of the piece of silk I painted
In the photo above I kept adding drops of black dye to the sodium alginate/water solution, until I was happy with the way it looked on the silk. You can see the numbers 1, 2 and 3 as I was adding a few more drops at a time until I reached the right level of black.
UPDATE Feb 18, 09 : Using this new black gutta-like substance with applicators and fine nibs - http://abfab-art-studio.blogspot.com/2009/02/how-to-paint-on-silk-video-004-make.html
PRODUCTS USED
Silk: Habotai
Gutta: Sodium Alginate with black dye
Colours: fiber-reactive - some Procion / some Drimarene K
Oooooooohhhhh I love this crazy style of painting - I had lots of fun!

Hi Teena,
This is really an interesting way of using black lines:) This is meera from india, for me the black gutta liner from Setasilk is very expensive....I think this will be useful. It works more like a pigment colour.I have a suggestion. You could also use it with empty liners from Morabu...or use liner bottles with metal tips...
Only problem might be the consistency as it needs to be thick not very flowy..
Thanks again for sharing interesting info..
happy painting..
Have a wonderful day

And, if you wanted a fine line, you can use a syringe or gutta bottle! Awesome - can't wait to try this.
Hi DeBorah,
Thanks for dropping by!
If you click my videos you will see my instructions for making the alginate outliner, and using it with applicator bottles and nibs.
cheers

Hi Teena. I have been watching your videos. Your work is so amazing. I also made gutta out of sodium Alignate but mine is spreading on the fabric. Can you please help me where I am going wrong. Thanks in advance.
