Lunch with Fran and Koki

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Lunch with the Girls!

It was so lovely to catch up with Koki and Fran this week, listening to their news as we had a few lattes and a yummy lunch at Piccolo Padres in Rozelle.

The café has a delightful little back courtyard with a tiny fishpond - golden koi were swimming around lazily under the trickling of the little waterfall, and the fronds of the palm treess rustled on the gentle summer breeze. The music is generally easy-listening and not too loud, so that helps tremendously when there's a lot of talking and listening going on :-)

Our two hours went by so quickly and we kept chatting on the footpath, but had to get back to our cars before the ever-vigilant parking police (grrrr).

See you soon girls! It was fabulous to see you both, let's not leave it so long next time!!

Silk at Moline in Paris

Saturday, August 23, 2008

I'm still sorting through almost 1,000 photos I took in Paris in June, and a truly memorable day was the one I spent in Montmartre with my friend Sigrun, going through the beautiful Moline fabric stores. Moline has several stores within walking distance of each other, each with a specialty of its own.

Of course I wanted to find the SILK one, which had these two store models to draw me in.

Click the photo to zoom in on the detail - these frocks are made without sewing, and you can see lots of fine detail which has been cut into the silk for display. You'd never see this in Sydney!

I also marvelled over the fabulous way the rolls of silk were displayed in their wooden wall units - an ingenious fabric strip with large holes punched in it, to slot the end of the roll into and allow it to unroll easily. Marvellous!

Being Frenchified at Sydney French Film Festival

Friday, March 14, 2008

The French Film Festival is on in Sydney at the moment, so I'll be immersing myself in film and Frenchiness at the Norton St Cinema over the next week ...

I might not do as much painting as I'd like while I practice my Franglais ;-)

A bientot!

These are some of the amazing display of handpainted silk banners which were on display at the Aubijoux International Silk Painters Festival, in Chambon-sur-Lignon in June this year.

Such a huge variety of techniques and skills from around the world - it was delightful to be there in person, and to also be there for the drawing of the winners.

More photos to come!!

AlterEgo Dyes & Devoré Velvet

Saturday, July 28, 2007

At the International Silk Painting Festival [in Chambon-sur-Lignon, France - June 2007], I attended several workshops and tried lots of techniques - I was in heaven :-)
One of the techniques I'd heard about for years but never got around to trying is the use of two types of dyes on the one fabric which has 'piles' or 'tufts'. The velvet pile has shapes cut out of it, and the backing fabric is different to the velvet pile, which means you can paint each with a different colour.

What is it?

The brand is called AlterEgo, and is a dye which only colors silk - it is is combined in a single dyebath [or painted direct onto fabric] with another type of dye, Procion, which colors both silk and rayon. The results are amazing - you can see one colour on the silk backing and another colour on the rayon pile/plush. You can see this in wonderful combos when used on silk/rayon velvet scarves, especially if the devoré technique has been used to create a pattern on the velvet.

An arty friend of mine regularly makes winter scarves using this technique, but instead of painting by hand [like I do] she puts the velvet in a saucepan and pours the two colours in.

Now I know you'll find this hard to believe - but the colours DO NOT mix together. When she removes the velvet, the backing takes on one colour and the velevet pile has taken on the second colour. How cool is that?

Back to France ...

The workshop I attended was a lot of fun - our Tutor is a well-known French textile designer and silk artist, who designs for some of the most well-known fashion houses and designers in France. We experimented and played with multiple layers using hot wax on the velvet after each applicaion of colour [from the two types of dyes - AlterEgo & Dupont Silk Dyes].

Above: Applying the hot wax. You can see the bright white of the velvet, and the grey areas are the devoré bits where the velvet has been 'eaten away'.
The yellowish areas are the hot wax.

Above: Applying AlterEgo dye and Dupont Silk Dye.
You can see the yellowish wax areas quite clearly, with the green background and the orange second layer. You can do as many layers as you like, using the wax.

Above: Adding final highlights with a bronze liquid [called Nacre - Bronze in French]

The velvet is a thirsty fabric - it soaks up a LOT of dye, so be prepared for that. The cost of the AlterEgo dyes is quite high when compared to the usual silk dyes, but the results are well worth it.

Final note - it was faaabulous attending classes in FRENCH and discovering that my understanding was much better than I thought :)

Ciao for now

History of Silk, Lyon, France

Saturday, July 14, 2007

While I was in Lyon visiting friends, I was thrilled to be taken on an impromptu walking tour along the silk history trail.

I was so impressed by this, I've arranged for the same tour for my students who will visit France with me in June 2008.

We started at the top of one of the hills of Lyon, and walked downhill along the well-worn silk paths taken by many of the silk workers of Lyon - up to 450 years ago. Such a sense of history!

The silk manufacturing industry started in Lyon, and housed the countries best silk artisans. The silk was created and placed on long rolls, which were then carried from one part of the city to another, down stairs made specifically for this reason. There had to be plenty of room for the 'runners' to carry the long rolls of silk [see the stairs in this photo below].

We came across a plaque commemorating the silk workers:

Stay tuned for more photos of my wonderful silken adventure in Lyon.

The Car Rally & Procion Dye Guy

Saturday, July 07, 2007

Above: What a beauty I spotted at the Car Rally at the Chateau! Yes, I'm wearing one of my handpainted silk chiffon coats painted with Procion dyes. Perfect for travelling in!

After my week in Chambon-sur-Lignon at the International Silk Painting Festival, I was visiting a Chateau in the surrounding area and stopped to chat with some people also visiting at the same time.

When they asked me what I was up to in this district, I told them about the Festival.

Imagine my surprise when one of the husbands asked me if I'd ever heard of PROCION dyes.

Well of course I said, "Yes!" - and then he totally blew me away by saying,, "My father invented Procion dyes!"

He went on to tell me fascinating little stories about his Dad and his life living with a chemical engineer as a kid. Wow! What a serendipitous meeting! I was ever so pleased - there may be no such thing as a coincidence, but there are certainly things in the universe which make exciting adventures happen :-)

Above: That's Mr. 'Procion' second from left, and me in the middle.

Toggles for silk clothing

Thursday, June 28, 2007

Here are the silk toggles I mentioned in a previous post - aren't the colours gorgeous? I will use one pair per coat, sew them at approximately bust level, as closures. Bit of a change from the usual black or white Chinese toggles I have used in the past, and I don't have to dye these!

The photo doesn't do them justice - I'll try to take a better one :-)

Each toggle is about 1.5 inches long / approx 4cm.

Au revoir!

A roll of handpainted silk in Paris

Here's another shot of my all-time favourite roll of handpainted silk I came across - isn't it delicious?? Yum!!! The price on this is 66,90 Euro, translates to approx $A110 per metre, or $US91 per yard.

Phew! For all of us textile designers / silk artists, we might want to rethink our prices :-)

Oh what fun I'm having in gay Paree!!

Ciao for now

Sumptuous silk in the streets of Paris

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

I love the textile district of Paris - all the fabrics outside each store, beckoning you inside, rich colours, fabulous textures ... ahhhhh, this is so wonderful!

I had such a good time, I had to have a rest in a local café while I gathered my strength to look in more fabric stores :-) All of the streets around here are filled with fascinating little stores of all kinds, and I spent a delight6ful day checking them all out. I found a great little haberdashery store which sold the most wonderful Chinese toggles I can use on my handpainted silk coats.

More soon!

Art Musings from Paris

Monday, June 11, 2007

DAY #1 - I'm here! Finally, after way too many years, I have come back to Paris where I used to live, where I learnt to paint on silk, and where I had a wonderful life :-)

I am going to be catching up with some friends, exploring the textile shops laden with silk of all descriptions in Montmartre, scouring the little haberdashery shops surrounding the area, and totally immersing myself in the culture. Ahhhhhh, bliss!

I'll write on the blog as often as I can --- oooohhh I am as excited as a new puppy!

Au revoir,
Teena!
