Sydney textile tour of Indian saris
Monday, September 03, 2007
Over the weekend I went on a mini textile tour with a couple of friends, sort of like Thelma and Louise and Thelma and Louise :-)
We were in the car for over an hour and I'm sure everyone was tired of my chirpiness by then [you know who you are!] and we reached our destination - Liverpool (heading west from Sydney). With no real 'plan' in mind, except to see and touch Indian saris, we thought we should fortify ourselves first with lunch. Splendid idea!
Our tour guide [the one who knew this area] took us to one of her favourite vegetarian Indian restaurants, where we pored over the delicious menu and couldn't decide what to have. We all chose Dosas, which can best be described as giant crepes with yummy vegie fillings, which are then rolled up on two sides only, to create a stuffed crepe about 15cm across, and longer than the plates they were sitting on. They were presented with 3 small bowls - greeen, orange, and soup-like, into which we dipped our broken-off bits of Dosa. In one word? Deeeeelicious!!
After much laughter and frivolity, we got down to serious business -- shopping.
We visited 5 or 6 stores [I lost count] and ooohhed and aaahhhed our way through an amazing number of saris, Indian clothing, jewels, jewellery, shoes ... and the overwhelming theme was COLOUR. I've never seen such a gorgeous display of all my favourites - hot hot pink next to vibrant lime green, a delicious turquoise blue and a stunningly sunny yellow. There were another 50 or 60 colours - too numerous to name :-) and I was in 'colour heaven'! And we touched every sari we saw - what a tactile textile treat!!
I also loved the mens' shoes, with those amazing curled up toes - ooooohhhh I want some of those for ME!!
All too soon we were exhausted, and set off for home, with another hour or so of frivolity in the car. What a fabulous day! Next time we're heading off to a Vietnamese area in Sydney, to be part of the street stalls and markets and the ethnic foods. Yum! Can't wait!
Cheers
