Surface Design magazine has arrived!

Friday, August 31, 2007

Oooohhhhhh, just got back from the Post Office where my first copy of the Surface Design Organization Magazine was waiting for me. Here it is - all shiny and new, and as my friends know, I loooove new shiny things :-)

So in true Teena-style, I walked across the road from the P.O. and into a café where I've never been before [Café 2000], ordered a latte, and proceeded to rip open the DHL airmail envelope and DEVOUR the words and gorgeous coloured photos .... Ahhhhhh bliss! I am soooo excited, I've known about the organization for years, but never attempted to become a member. Everyone I knew overseas who received the SDO quarterly magazine always gushed about how fabulous it was, and now i can do that too!!

The magazine was accompanied by the SDO Newsletter, which is also chock full of great news - I'm going to contact some of the groups and people, and use my membership to the best advantage. I miss having textile/silk artists to chat with ...

As I savoured my Italian coffe [a café latte], I oohed and ahhed over the articles, exhibitions, photos, and inspirations ... just what I needed!

In the same post I was over the moon to receive small parcel from a silk supply company in CHINA. I've been emailing with their representative for a very long time, and finally decided to try to import some of their products. The sample I received today is terrific, so I'm thrilled with that! Goodness, what a wonderful afternoon I've had!!

I've also just made arrangements to meet an arty associate at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney at Circular Quay [pronounced 'key'] in two weeks, which I'm really looking forward to.

All of this and it's only Friday arvo [afternoon]! A faaabulous end to a great week - I'll write more when I've gone back over the magazine.

Ciao ciao
Teena!

I'm a member of Surface Design Organization

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

I'm very excited! This week I have joined the Surface Design Organization USA on http://www.surfacedesign.org - something I've been meaning to do for ages!

Their next Conference is in April 2008, and I might just start planning a trip to the USA for their 2009 Conference, as I'll be in France in June 2007 with a group of silk artists.

Breaking New Ground
April 5-9, 2008
Symposium, Tour & Workshops
Wayne Art Center, Wayne, PA near Philadelphia
For more info visit the SDA website
http://www.surfacedesign.org/conference.asp

I'm soooo excited to see my name on their list of members already :-)

I'm off to look at some of the members' websites - what fun!!

I've just been going over some articles on AustralianSilkworm.com and it was fun reading about some of the great textile designers I've come across over the past few years.

Ohhhhhh I do so love the internet! :-)

This is a photo of my workspace one day, all my paints and brushes ready to go:

With the sun shining through the window, I remember this day :-) and the joy I always feel when painting on silk ...

Ciao for now

Handpainted silk cockatoo

Sunday, August 26, 2007

This afternoon a huge sulphur-crested cockatoo sat on my balcony with an equally huge black crow - what a pair they made!

Looking at the cockatoo took me hurtling back through space and time to my very FIRST painting on silk, when I lived in Paris. I had just received a letter from my sister in Australia and the postage stamp had a cockatoo on it.

I sketched the bird on paper, enlarge to 36x36 inches, and painted my first silk painting. When it was steamed and hemmed by the local French lady, I posted it to my sister who decided to frame it under glass.

Many years later when I returned to Sydney on a visit, I saw that cockatoo ... and I was so embarrassed at how it looked haha. After painting on silk for a few years I'd learnt a LOT since my first painting, that's for sure :-)

I'll see if I can find some photos of that original silk painting ...

Ciao ciao

These are some of the amazing display of handpainted silk banners which were on display at the Aubijoux International Silk Painters Festival, in Chambon-sur-Lignon in June this year.

Such a huge variety of techniques and skills from around the world - it was delightful to be there in person, and to also be there for the drawing of the winners.

More photos to come!!

Cheers
Teena

Testing new way to display photos ... a slideshow should appear. If it doesn't please send me a COMMENT [below], stating Mac or PC, and which browser - thanks! PS - I am not looking for a critique of my old photos :) I am looking for info on whether the photo viewer works well on other computer platforms and browser sotware. More info on technique is below ...

Silk habotai 8mm, French dyes, water-based gutta, watercolour technique [using watered backgrounds before applying dye]. Handpainted by Teena Hughes

I have set the speed to 'slowest', and wasn't sure if the captions would be too long - please let me know what you think :) Simply click the COMMENTS link below this post.

Tuesday, August 07, 2007

My gorgeous friend Ange returns to the USA to live this week, so we had one last night on the town, in our favourite restaurant in Norton Street, Leichhardt.

As per usual, we chose our favourites, and this time Ange also opted for dessert ...

I sure will miss your sparkling personality and fabulous chats, Ange!

I've been testing different ways of displaying photos online the past week or two, so I can showcase my handpainted textiles ... and I think I've found something I like better than the rest. I'm testing this with 3 of my Paris photos - I hope you can see this:
